Reverse Advent Calendar Food Drive: A full season of giving

Updated: Oct 24

The holidays are an expensive time for low-income families in Northwest North Carolina. With the onset of cold weather, utility bills rise and with the children out of school, additional childcare and meal costs add up.

This December, so many of our supporters will be generously donating to our food drives and to our partner network. Looking for a way to keep the conversation about giving going throughout the season? Try a reverse advent calendar!

The idea is a simple one:

1. Make a box or boxes and place cardboard dividers to section out the days (wine boxes work well for this!). Some people use small brown bags to divide out the days; others skip this step and just put the donations into the box and mark each day off in marker on the side.

2. Put a donation into the box each day of advent, so they have a collection of goods ready to drop off in time for the holidays at Second Harvest or your local food bank (or after! It will keep!)
