We’re thrilled to lift up cherished members of our Second Harvest community, recently recognized for their exceptional contributions to our mission as recipients of both the 2016 Forsyth County Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards and the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.
Since 2009, Catherine Dillon and Polly Tucker, founding members of our “Egg Diva” volunteer brigade, have been a weekly fixture and dynamic duo at our food bank, guiding and training scores of volunteers in the process of inspecting donated eggs. Labor Finders of Winston-Salem also earned justly deserved recognition for their generous contribution of more than 1,200 hours of person power to our Salvage Program and their leadership in encouraging employees and others to serve as ambassadors and advocates on behalf of Second Harvest.
Eggs are an important source of protein for those we serve. One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids.
People living with food insecurity have a higher rate of diet related illness and frequently use their purchasing power to buy calories instead of nutrients so that they don’t feel hungry. That is why our egg program is so important to what we do. We need to feed the health of communities.
However, the process of collecting eggs and making sure they are healthy and safe is a tedious process. Without volunteers like The Egg Divas, Second Harvest wouldn’t be able to provide these eggs and necessary nutrients to our partner agencies.
We cannot do what we do without our volunteers!
