Action Alert: US House Budget Vote

Updated: Nov 26

On July 19, 2017, the US House Budget Committee passed its FY2018 budget resolution.

The House will be voting on this resolution this week. Your Representative needs to hear from you today.

The resolution includes at least $203 billion in cuts to mandatory programs—many of which are critical to low-income families and to our work as a community to ensure they have the nutrition they need to thrive.

Specifically, the resolution calls for $10 billion in cuts directed at agriculture, with reports suggesting those cuts would come primarily from SNAP (food stamps), with an additional $150 billion in suggested cuts from dramatic downsizing and restructuring of SNAP.

We know cuts to SNAP and other nutrition programs included in this budget resolution will increase food insecurity in Northwest North Carolina. SNAP is not only essential to working families as they strive to make ends meet, but the program also supports our state in many other ways.

Now is the time to ask your Members of Congress to “Vote No” on the House budget resolution.

In response to the proposed cuts and restructuring, we are asking that you call your Representative (see below) and deliver this message:

My name is [NAME].

As a constituent and a supporter of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, I am calling to ask that you oppose the House budget resolution.

This budget resolution contains cuts that are very harmful to programs that help some of the most vulnerable in our communities. The bulk of the cuts will end up cutting SNAP.

Even though SNAP benefits are not enough to feed a family, they help recipients stretch their grocery budgets and put nutritious meals on the table.

I hope that you will stand up for the families in Northwest North Carolina by opposing the budget resolution.
